Graduate student position: A protein complex repressing translation of the Drosophila nanos mRNA

A DFG-funded position for a graduate student (65% E13; three years) is available in the lab of Elmar Wahle, Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany.
The project aims at a biochemical understanding of the mechanism by which translation of the Drosophila nanos mRNA is repressed. A concentration gradient of the Nanos protein in the early embryo is essential for the formation of the anterior-posterior polarity of the fly. The gradient is generated by localized translation of the nanos mRNA at the posterior pole and repression of translation throughout the rest of the embryo.
We have determined the composition of the protein complex repressing translation, and our major goal is now the reconstitution of the complex from purified proteins. For this purpose, baculovirus expression of protein complexes will be used.
The funded project is a collaboration with the group of Martine Simonelig in Montpellier, France, who uses genetic techniques to study nanos regulation.
We are looking for candidates with a master's degree in biochemistry or a related discipline. Students who are expecting to obtain their degree in the near future are also encouraged to apply. Ideally, candidates should have some experience in cloning, protein overexpression and purification, but commitment, intelligence, and ability to work in a team are more important than previous experience.
The project will benefit from a stimulating scientific environment with several groups sharing an interest in post-transcriptional regulation ( and many others providing expertise in various aspects of protein biochemistry. The city of Halle is much nicer than its reputation.
